With Grace’s June coping skill of the month is Cleaning. While cleaning sometimes may just feel like a chore or even a bother, there are numerous physical and mental health benefits to be found within the cleaning process as well as its results. Physically, cleaning the home can be a form of exercise and can remove allergens or pollutants from the home. Mentally, cleaning can lead to an improved sense of calmness safety and control within the home as well as a sense of productivity in general. Some effective cleaning strategies could be setting daily goals or creating a weekly schedule by area or chore. Setting aside daily 20min - 1 hr block of time of dedicated to cleaning could also be more suited to you. Others may prefer to their do their cleaning on a weekend or day off to get it out of the way. However you choose to do your cleaning, considering it to be a staple or aid within your mental healthcare routine may be a helpful motivator or reminder. It would be remiss to not mention that with several mental health struggles or in a period of grief or struggle, a common symptom can be the loss of routines such as cleaning or self care. It can also feel like an insurmountable task to recover your space or routines from this time of neglect as you come out of it. Taking your time to rebuild these routines gradually or considering modifications to your routines that can be done even in times of struggle are both options that could allow this coping skill to still be incorporated.
